Seeing as to how the exams are approaching quite soon, there shall be no manga lessons for next week, and the week after. However, do feel free to still drop by anyway, seeing as to how we’ll be dropping by the clubroom during Wednesday because some of us don’t have any exams or have only a couple to account for.
It’s Teacher’s Day, though, so maybe dropping by this Saturday would be a better alternative. We’ll be dropping by at like 10am maybe? And we can just sit down and draw in the clubroom just because it might be fun.
Instead, have a Livestream video which is about 2 hours long, which documents the process of making an illustration by me, the President, from start to finish. The real picture only gets started on around the 30 minute mark, though.
There’s a contest by Wacom Asia, which sadly is already about half over, but there are many things you can do in a month, and painting a monster is just one of them!
Wacom the Fourth Anime/Manga Character Design Contest
Both Seniors and Juniors are encouraged to take part if they’re interested in Digital Art; Just so you know, the main prize is a kickin’ rad Wacom Intuos 4 Large, though the second place and third place prizes aren’t too bad either. Just so you know, the Intuos 4 is seriously a professional level tablet (though it wouldn’t be any good if you didn’t know your way around digital software and don’t have a proper grasp on the concepts of art), and it literally costs three quarters of a grand to afford one.
My teacher used to tell me, that success is a mixture of preparedness and opportunity. And let me tell you, that this opportunity doesn’t come every day.
The President,
signing off.
Like what I said in the previous post, there will be lessons held at Republic Polytechnic. As per the previous post, we will be meeting at the clubroom at 2pm before we all leave for RP.
For the manga department, please note that the next two joint lessons will be held at RP, from 3 to 7pm. Meet us at the clubroom above foodcourt 5 before 2pm, and we will all leave for Republic Poly.
You’d probably heard (or not heard) of the Natsumatsuri going on at The Japanese School at Changi Campus. For those of you who want to come to this event, you might wanna meet up with the rest of the club members in the club room before we leave. We will be meeting at the clubroom at 3p.m. However, this only applies to those people who snitched and got tickets from Nigel. For those of you who HAVEN’T gotten their tickets yet, we wish you good luck as you queue up for your own tickets on the spot that day.
For those of you who wish to go there by yourself or with another group of friends, the event is being held at the Japanese Primary School, Changi Campus, 11 Upper Changi Road North.
Another matter that was said during the AGM. There will be an intensive camp for both Manga and Plamo division. The detail will be given later into the dates. Please check back with your respective division’s head to confirm the details.
A rough estimation of the camp dates would during the semster break. Be sure to make time during the break for this.
As most of you who have attended the AGM yesturday should know, we are having this (not really a contest but a open to all in our club) SPLA T-shirt design event.
Those interested, just draw it out with pencil on an A4 paper or digitally on your computer. It does not have to be colour as we just want to see the concept of your design. Please submit by this coming friday (30/7) so that we can proceed with the voting for the designs.
For those doing on paper, just come down to the clubrm and pass it to Jian Zhang or Nigel for submission. If they are not there, pass to anyone who is there and have them pass to either one of them.
For those doing it digitally, you don’t have to send the original thing, just the JPEG or PNG will do. Send it to either Marcus ( teokeez@gmail.com ) or Hong Xi ( icydoremon@hotmail.com ).
The design with the most votes will of cause have their picture printed on the back of the T-shirt.
Voting and other stuff will be posted later after Friday.
All the best to all participants.
We’re holding our Annual General Meeting at T2013 on Saturday (24/07/2010) at 10.30am. Do go straight there instead of gathering at the clubroom. It is estimated that the AGM will take around 2 hours.
Oh, T20′s around the top of the Hill in case you don’t know where that is in the direction of Food Court 4 from the clubroom.
Thanks for your time.
Okay, heres an update on whats coming up.

Okay, like I mentioned today (7/7/2010, Wednesday) in LT4, one of our ultimate goals in SPLA Manga is to create comics on our own and self-publish them as an Anthology.
Just in case, this is what an Anthology is:
“An anthology is a collection of literary works chosen by the compiler” – Wikipedia, on the term ‘anthology’
While I know wikipedia is not exactly the best of places to find a definition in, I believe it’s the good anyway, because that was really the meaning of the term I was trying to find.
And… with no further ado…
The ‘SPLA’ Comic Anthology Project!
What do we do?
You are given a period of 1 semester + a term get into a group and start working on a comic production of free length (but please, please please do not just draw 1 page and tell me to call it a day). Creativity is very encouraged here, and of course, working with your teammates is something we want to encourage, too.
What do we get?
Experience would be the core principle behind comic drawing. Comic drawing in most cases would require you to draw characters from all sorts of angles and lightings, which would be great experience for everyone. In addition, comic writing would mean that the whole team would be subjected to the planning processes of a comic, such as panelling and writing, that good art does not necessarily mean a good comic. And of course, along with that might come other things like recognition and stuff.
The key word being ‘might’.
Oh, and I guess there might be CCA points coming along with that.
The key word being ‘might’ once again.
I can’t write!
Go back to Primary School.
I can’t draw!
Learn. Practice. Do not be afraid of failure.
I don’t know how to make comics!
Believe it or not, we’re actually going to go through that!
Is there anything we should avoid making?
Stories with anything that screws with the law (racist content, pulling someone’s name in the mud, etc.) must be avoided by all means.
So how is this project going to end?
We’re going to take all the submitted works and print them down to form a ‘book’, which will be kept in SPLA as a reminder of the work done by everyone.
Instead, digital versions would be placed on CCA.SG, where more content can be uploaded even after the project should the team decide that they want to continue working on the comic even past the pilot chapter.
Because CCA.SG would be seen by potential secondary school students, and the people managing the website and probably more other people I don’t even know about, this is a great chance for exposure.

Project Milestones!
Week 1 – 7/7/2010 – Announcement of the Anthology Project
Week 4 – 4/8/2010 – 1st Milestone – Groups shall announce their project concept, showing at least some character designs and some other plot ideas which they MIGHT have thought of but chose the one they want instead. Even better, provide an estimated length of their part of the anthology…
